Riddick’s Folly House Museum

While Mills Riddick’s contemporaries may have mocked his Greek Revival home when it was built in 1837, the house now stands as a beautiful reminder of the past.

This most impressive structure on Main Street in Suffolk features striking architectural details. The five frieze band windows across the front of the house are rarely seen in eastern Virginia. The front of the mansion is bricked in Flemish bond, and double chimneys rise from both ends of the stately historic landmark. Slender columns of the Greek Revival period frame the main entrance. The interior showcases intricately carved, gilded moldings and elaborate ceiling medallions throughout the main floor of the house.

Suffolk Golf Course

Suffolk GC was built in 1952 by Dick Wilson. This old course will test every club in your bag. It is an old fashioned tree lined course that plays longer than the yardage with the elavation change and doglegs that need to be negotiated. The back nine views are beautiful with many of the holes having Lake Kilby in play. If your lucky enough, you might catch a view of the bald eagle on hole 12. The greens have been changed to Champion Bermuda grass to match the fairways.

Suffolk GC prides itself on trying to make the course “tournament ready” everyday for every guest that plays. Our slogan is “Public golf with a Private club feel”. It is easy for the ladies and juniors to enjoy the course because the tees are beginner friendly. We want you to have a wonderful golfing experience at Suffolk GC. When you finish your round, stop into our snack bar and try one of our many delicious items.

Sleepy Hole Golf Course

Designed in 1973 by architect Russell Breeden, picturesque Sleepy Hole Golf Course is located along the shores of the beautiful Nansemond River.  Once the home of the LPGA Crestar Classic during the 1980s, the course has played host to a number of amateur and professional events through its history.  Today, the facility annually hosts our Amateur Championship, a VSGA point rankings event, which showcases the talents of many of Virginia and the East Coast’s top gentlemen amateurs.   Our course took a well-earned rest for renovation in 2003 under the supervision of architect Tom Clark, and today continues to thrive as one of the most popular facilities in the Tidewater Region.  In 2012, our Golf Pro Shop, Grille, and Event facilities established a permanent home in the renovated Obici House, which remains as one of the most iconic clubhouses in the area.

The classic feel with playable tree-lined fairways, beautiful landscaping, and well-placed bunkers will take you back to a different era of golf course design.  Our practice facilities feature a full-length driving range, short game area, and putting green.  The legendary 18th hole, rated as “the most difficult finishing hole” in Hampton Roads is waiting to challenge you.

King Neptune Statue

Created by artist Paul DiPasquale, King Neptune stands 26 feet tall, sun reflecting off his frame, wave-inspired curls cast in bronze. He is the son of Saturn, Lord of the Sea. He is King Neptune, and with a majestic presence only he can muster, he presides over Virginia Beach’s newest oceanfront park. Located at 31st and Atlantic, Neptune’s Park is the third venue of its kind along the resort strip. The Thoroughgood House – CIRCA 1719

One of the oldest surviving colonial homes in Virginia Beach and a National Historic Landmark, the Thoroughgood House was likely built in 1719 by Argall Thorowgood II, great-grandson of Adam Thorowgood. A leader in the Virginia Colony, Adam Thorowgood helped establish Princess Anne County, which would later become the independent City of Virginia Beach.

Argall Thorowgood died mid-construction and his wife Susannah completed the work. Their son John later added the elements for which the house is known: its extensive wainscoting and paneling, as well as its dramatic turned staircase. The home is furnished to reflect the period that John Thorowgood and his household occupied the site.

Current Thoroughgood House Tour Schedule:

Thursdays: 10am-4pm

Fridays: 10am-4pm

Saturdays: 10am-4pm

Sundays: 1pm-5pm

The Adventure Park at Virginia Aquarium

Adventure Parks are different from traditional ropes courses. Our parks consist of a selection of different “aerial trails” up in the trees of a forest. Climbers navigate from one tree platform to another, crossing challenge bridges of cable wood and rope, as well as zip lines. The trails are color-coded according to difficulty, ranging from introductory through advanced, so there is suitable challenge depending on a climber’s experience and abilities. Participants wear harnesses, which are doubly secured to safety cables using the Park’s “always locked on” system of interlocking safety clips.

Look up

You’ll see a series of platforms in the trees connected by cable, wood, rope, and zip lines to form bridges. Each bridge will challenge your skills to get to the next platform. These bridges form “aerial trails” throughout the forest.

Relax

You don’t have to be an acrobat or an athlete to join the adventure! Choose from five different color-coded trails, ranging from beginner (easier and lower to the ground) to intermediate, to advanced (the most challenging).

Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1938 to protect and provide habitat for migratory and wintering waterfowl, or ducks, geese and swans.. The refuge encompasses a variety of habitats including beach, dunes, shrub-scrub, freshwater wetlands and woodlands. The primary unit of the wildlife refuge sits a thin strip of barrier island coastline typical of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Other areas of the refuge include islands in Back Bay and upland areas on the west bank of the bay.

Thousands of tundra swans, snow and Canada geese and a large variety of ducks visit the refuge during the fall/winter migration. Refuge waterfowl populations usually peak during December and January. The refuge also provides habitat for other wildlife, including such threatened and endangered species as the loggerhead sea turtle, and recently recovered species like the brown pelican and bald eagle.

In addition to providing habitat for migratory birds and wildlife, Back Bay Refuge provides over eight miles of scenic trails, a Visitor Center, interpretive programming and, with advance scheduling, environmental education opportunities. Popular outdoor recreation activities at the refuge include hiking, biking, freshwater fishing, surf fishing, kayaking/canoeing, wildlife photography and wildlife observation.

Cape Henry Lighthouse

Cape Henry Lighthouse is the first federally funded public works project of the newly formed United States government. It was authorized by George Washington and overseen by Alexander Hamilton. The Lighthouse is situated near the “First Landing” site where English settlers first set foot on their way to settle in Jamestown. Built with the same Aquia sandstone as much of Washington, D.C, the lighthouse guided sea travelers to safety for almost 100 years. The distinctive black and white striped “New” Cape Henry Lighthouse was built in 1881 but remains closed to the public.

Preservation Virginia members placed a tablet on the tower in 1896 to mark the site of the “First Landing” and in 1930 an act of Congress deeded the Lighthouse and surrounding land to our care.

Today, Cape Henry Lighthouse is surrounded by the Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story (JEBFS).

Please review the guidelines provided by JEBFS for entering the military base before your visit.

Here, art makes way for us to connect.

As a contemporary, non-collecting museum, we are what we curate. We seek out the most soulful, rigorous art and artists, adapting and reinventing our space with each exhibition, because we believe in a shared space between different perspectives. As an accredited member of the American Alliance of Museums, we will continue to work tirelessly to share what we know, what we’re learning, and how best to navigate the art world. We are here to add meaning to the very idea of what a museum is. This is where art works its magic.

Fort Boykin

Fort Boykin is a small, partly wooded park on a high bluff overlooking the James River. The site dates back to 1623 and commemorates a fort that protected the Commonwealth for 239 years. Subsequently, gardens were established around the ruins of the fort. A 12-station trail interprets the historic aspects of the site. As the trail is walked, white-tailed deer, woodpeckers and a variety of songbirds such as eastern wood-pewee, and northern cardinal, and eastern bluebirds may be encountered. Butterflies flitting along the bushy edges include summer azure, pipevine swallowtail, American snout, and eastern tailed blue. From the bluff, bald eagles and ospreys can be seen soaring over the James River, as well as more common birds such as Forster’s tern, great blue herons, and several species of swallows. The available trails also include beach access onto the James River where a variety of waterfowl can be observed, particularly in the winter.
