Bacon’s Castle

Bacon’s Castle is the oldest brick dwelling in North America and was built for Arthur Allen and his family in 1665. Originally known as Allen’s Brick House, it earned the moniker “Bacon’s Castle” in 1676 when several of Nathaniel Bacon’s men occupied the home for four months during the uprising that became known as Bacon’s Rebellion.

Bacon’s Castle is a rare example of High Jacobean architecture. The home features a reconstructed 17th-century English formal garden restored by the Garden Club of Virginia. Several outbuildings also survive, including an 1830 slave dwelling.

Preservation Virginia acquired Bacon’s Castle in the 1970’s at auction and meticulously researched, restored and furnished the house in the 1980’s.

Self-Led Walking Tours

Go on a self-led tour around Suffolk using the Traipse app!

Traipse is a free smartphone application that leads users on a walking tour of landmarks and local businesses, or in non-urban settings on a driving tour of cultural heritage and agri-tourism sites. At each stop on a Traipse tour, users get some information about that site and are challenged with a location-dependent riddle or puzzle to solve. Traipse “gamifies” the experience of visiting a tourist attraction or leisure destination, or attending an event – much like Fitbit gamifies exercise or Pokemon Go facilitates collecting virtual artifacts in real world locations – while also involving local businesses and organizations.

Throughout downtown, other historic attractions along the Cannonball Trail include The MacArthur Memorial, Hampton Roads Naval Museum at Nauticus, The Moses Myers House, St Paul’s Episcopal Church, the Hunter House Victorian Museum and the Norfolk History Museum at the Willoughby-Baylor House.

Tales by Rail Tour

There are hundreds of stories to be shared about Norfolk; from a revolutionary cannonball lodged in the brick wall of a church and passages in secret along the Underground Railroad, to the statues of decorated heroes and battleships. Keep your eye out for custom-made mermaid statues throughout downtown and in surrounding neighborhoods. Take the Tales by Rails self-guided tour and discover these and many other Norfolk tales, and maybe make a few of your own.
